We all know that amazing feeling of falling into bed comforted by our favorite pillow and perfect mattress. It almost feels like they were made for you right? The way you sink into your mattress and your head is supported just the right way, ahhhhh!

Or maybe you fall into the group that’s nowhere near happy with the mattress and pillow you have. It’s just something you’ve kept because you don’t know what works best for your body.

Either way, we’ve got news for you — you can do better. That’s right, even if you feel like you’re sleeping on clouds, there is always room for improvement when it comes to your body.

Your body goes through changes all the time — pregnancy, age, injury. With those changes, your body needs more or less support to not only sleep better but feel better overall.

How A Good Night’s Sleep Benefits Your Health

There’s a reason almost everyone at some point in their life has been told to get some sleep, take a nap, relax. It’s because sleep is an integral part of our health and the more of it we get, the better we feel.

According to the National Institute of Health, a good night’s sleep gives you:

  • A refreshing feeling in the morning
  • More motivation throughout the day
  • Less irritability
  • Better concentration
  • Increased comprehension skills

This is why your mattress and pillow can act as great tools to help you sleep through the night peacefully.

Mattress Matters

You know the feeling when you stay somewhere for the night and the mattress just isn’t working for you. You toss and turn all night and wake up feeling groggy and irritated. Yeah, that’s why your mattress matters.

When your mattress is the way you like it, that means it supports your body in a way that allows it to relax easier and keep you asleep longer. It can even relieve aches and pains from a long day. So make sure you test out your mattress and see if it’s still helping you sleep the way you want.

However, to maximize these results, your mattress should be replaced every six to eight years. Over time, as you lay on your mattress it will start to give way and won’t be able to support your body properly. It can also trap dirt and allergens, affecting your health negatively that way as well.

Pillow Talk

Your pillows provide the same support your mattress does, but specifically for your head, neck, and your legs if needed.

People sleep in a variety of ways such as on their stomach or their side. If you’re constantly adjusting your pillow throughout the night, you’re not getting enough sleep. You should be able to lay down with your pillow, put it where it needs to be, and sleep through the rest of the night.

Don’t forget that pillows don’t have to be just for your head. You can use them to support between your legs for better alignment of the spine or to put behind you to help you feel more cocooned.

Pillows should be replaced every two years or sooner if you notice signs of lumps, sags or stains. Luckily, pillows are easier to clean and can usually either be washed or run through the dryer to kill any allergens that are stuck on them.
