As we wrap up our series on the three types of stress, we’ve come to the type of stress that may be the least obvious on the surface: chemical stress.

Chemical stress is brought upon the body by toxins found in our physical environment and in the things we ingest. This includes the air you breathe, what you put on your skin, and the food, drink, and medications you consume.

Chemical Stressors - What Are They?

There are plenty of ways to be proactive and reduce the amount chemical stress you put upon your body. Here are some areas where you can cut down on your chemical stress:

  • Proper Nutrition - Eating a healthy diet consisting of whole, unprocessed foods, plenty of vegetables, and fresh, filtered water are fundamental to reducing chemical stress.

    Eating highly processed, refined sugar filled foods, devoid of nutrition and potentially full of unhealthy chemicals adds a significant load to your chemical stress – not to mention can add extra pounds to your body (which adds physical stress).

  • Alcohol Use - Yes, it is true that many studies, including those performed by the Mayo clinic, show that drinking ONE glass of red wine can deliver heart healthy resveratrol and antioxidants, but drinking alcohol in excess can be extremely detrimental to your health.

    Liver and pancreas diseases, heart problems, and cancers have all been linked to alcohol. Having 2 or more drinks a day on average exponentially increases the chemical stress on your organs.

  • Cigarettes - It’s well known that smoking cigarettes is bad for your body. Every time you smoke, you introduce over 4000 harmful chemical compounds into your body. This is some pretty heavy chemical stress that can be avoided by quitting smoking.

  • Air Pollution -  When most people think of air pollution, smokestacks and car exhausts come to mind. As true as this is, it’s the air indoors that may be even more polluted.

    Chemical-based air fresheners, petroleum/paraffin-based candles, household cleaning products, mold, and pesticides are all common pollutants that you may not think about as potentially problematic.

  • Physically Applied Chemical Stressors - So far, we’ve discussed the major chemical stressors that affect us by ingesting them, either through eating or breathing them in. Your body can also absorb toxins through the skin.

    Lotions and soaps, hair shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, sunscreens, and perfumes/colognes can contain parabens, synthetic colors and fragrances, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate, formaldehyde and more.

What Can I Do About Chemical Stress?

Small changes in your everyday life and routine can reduce your chemical stress levels significantly. Choosing whole foods over pre-packaged convenience items, filtered water over diet soda, keeping alcohol use to one glass of red wine a day, stopping smoking, and choosing naturally derived cleaning and health products will help significantly.

Many times, we make poor food choices and turn to alcohol and cigarettes as a way to cope with mental and physical stress – inadvertently adding to our stress load, and creating a bit of a vicious cycle. The first question we have is, is this patient going to respond? And we have to take in all the information we get from our examination. We have a reasonable degree of certainty that if we accept you as a patient, you're going to get your desired results. Remember, the first visit here determines, do you belong here or not. Maybe there's another specialty that would come into play to help you with your problem. So, if a patient doesn't respond in a reasonable time frame, that's why we do periodic re-evaluations. When we do the thermal scan in the beginning to find out where the hot spots are, we're going to redo that again in 30 days. If it's not changing, or getting better on our hard core documentation and testing ... Guess what? We're not going to continue treating. We're going to find out what the problem is, where it is, and maybe what specialty should come into play.

Maybe we need a dentist, maybe it's a specialized TMJ issue. Maybe there is a visual problem, and we have to get an eye doctor involved. Maybe there is a neurological problem. Maybe if we see something on X-ray, which we've done many times, we'll send out for an MRI to get more clarity of what the problem is, and now we have knowledge, because knowledge is power, and we can help direct you get the fastest results, in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of specialties.

44% of Americans say in last five years their stress levels have risen dramatically. There are numerous factors that can increase mental stress. Americans attribute stress to their jobs, relationships, money issues, and even just the 24-hour news cycle.

What Happens to the Body During Mental Stress Situations

D.D. Palmer, the author of 1910’s The Chiropractor’s Adjuster, stated that the causes of nerve interference and subluxation are the 3 T’s: trauma, toxins, and thoughts. Since then, chiropractors around the world have used these three elements to identify the source of each patient’s nerve interference and subluxation, so not only can adjustments be made to the body, but the overall health and wellness of the patient can be taken care of.

Before we get to the Three T’s, we need to understand nerve interference and subluxation.

Subluxation

The chiropractic definition of subluxation is a slight misalignment of vertebrae. It is said to be the central cause of many health problems, according to chiropractic theory.

Nerve Interference

Subluxation is what causes nerve interference. Adjusting the misalignment of the vertebrae allows the nerves to function properly and restore and maintain overall health and wellness.

Chiropractors can help with many different types of physical pain by making spinal adjustments to correct nerve interference caused by subluxation. But what causes the subluxation in the first place?

The Three T’s: Trauma, Toxins, and Thoughts

If you are experiencing subluxation of your vertebrae, it is likely due to trauma, toxins, thoughts, or a combination of the three. Pinpointing the cause of your misalignment is a fundamental part of chiropractic medicine; with regular chiropractic adjustment, you can fix the not only the symptoms but the cause of the misalignment.

Trauma

Trauma is the most obvious cause of subluxation. This refers to any physical injury that might cause misalignment of your vertebrae. There are many different physical injuries capable of impacting the spine, including:  

  • Childbirth
  • Sports injury
  • Car accident
  • Forceful coughing
  • Fall

Your chiropractor may take x-rays or simply do a physical exam if you are having pain related to trauma. It’s likely that you will need to see the doctor for a series of chiropractic adjustments as well as an at-home regimen of stretching in order to fully heal your misalignment.

Toxins

The public at large is demanding more and more information about the toxins we are exposed to each day.  This includes the way these dangerous toxins come into contact with your body as well as the impact they have on your overall health. Any kind of toxin, such as a cleaning agent, processed food, or air pollution, can cause imbalances in your body. Your muscles react to imbalances by contracting, creating subluxation in your spine.

If you have had no physical trauma, but are having back issues, headaches, muscle weakness, or any other symptoms that could be related to subluxation, you might need to start looking at the toxins going into your body and where they are coming from. Sometimes changing the cleaning agents you use at home or making a change to your diet— coupled with regular chiropractic adjustments— can go a long way in fixing the alignment of your spine and relieving your pain.

Thoughts

While it might not be the most obvious cause of subluxation in the spine, it is likely the number one cause for most patients. Stress from your job, a fight with your significant other, worry about your kids, or even just watching the news can cause the muscles in your body to contract when you start feeling the stress and anxiety of everyday life.

Well, shoulder pain is extremely common these days. A lot of times, patients are going to have pain all over the shoulders. There's various conditions. It can show up in the front of the shoulder, the side of the shoulder, or back of the shoulder, and all regions can be diagnosed differently. But, most commonly, what we find is a bursitis or a frozen shoulder. Those are the most common. However, a lot of times, the shoulder pain can be coming from the neck. That's why it's always important to get a comprehensive evaluation and thermal scan to see exactly where the problem is coming from.
